A head-on collision is when the front of one motor vehicle strikes the front of another. Head-on collisions are among the most serious motor vehicle accidents and often result in severe injuries or death due to the amount of force involved when two or more vehicles collide.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles recorded 1,490 wrong way driving crashes which caused 1,454 injuries and 96 deaths in 2015. Studies have shown most of these crashes occur in the left or center lane, take place at high rates of speed on rural roads, happen at night, and may result in the death of one of the drivers or passengers. Although head-on collisions rarely occur, they cause 10% of all car accident fatalities.

Common Causes

A head-on collision typically occurs when a motor vehicle crosses a centerline or a median and collides with an oncoming vehicle. A head-on collision can also occur in a variety of other ways, such as when the driver of a motor vehicle intentionally or unintentionally travels down the wrong side of the road. Head on collisions happen due to driving while intoxicated, passing on a two-lane road, distracted driving, speeding, suddenly changing lanes, defective highways, mechanical defect or failure, a stopped vehicle, or careless driving. Surprisingly, only about 50% of Head-On Collisions are caused by drunk or otherwise chemically impaired drivers. Distracted driving is becoming one of the most serious causes of car crashes. Head-on collisions on highways are particularly dangerous when they occur as a result of the high speed of the vehicles involved.

Injuries resulting from Head-On Collisions

Despite the fact that head-on collisions occur infrequently, when they do occur, the injuries sustained are often catastrophic or fatal. Because of the magnitude of the forces involved, occupants of motor vehicles involved in a head-on collision often sustain serious brain and / or spinal cord injuries which may result in paraplegia or quadriplegia. Other injuries seen with head-on collisions involve bone fractures throughout the body and injuries to internal body organs.

The weight and speed of the vehicles involved has a significant bearing on the damage sustained in a head-on collision accident. In cases involving a truck or other heavy vehicle drifting into the opposite lane of travel due to sleep deprivation, intoxication, or distracted diving, the impact with a standard passenger vehicle will typically result in terrible, life-altering injuries to the occupants of the passenger vehicle or even death. It is critical that an attorney have a strong understanding of the physics involved in a head-on collision and how the speed/weight differential affects the severity of the impact and resulting injuries.

If you or a loved one is injured in a head-on collision, it is important that they have an attorney who knows how to conduct a thorough investigation and to assemble a team of experts. In addition to accident reconstruction experts, due to the serious nature of the injuries typically suffered in a head-on collision, attorneys must also be able to employ experts in any number of medical or economic areas to be able present proof of the severity of loss and get their client the recovery that he or she deserves. Winig Law has been advocating the rights of those injured in motor vehicle collisions for more than 30 years and knows exactly how to conduct that investigation and assemble that team of experts to get you the largest recovery possible under the circumstances of your case.
